Picture a 72 inch linear chandelier over a dining table, on a wall only 12 feet long. Before you order it, three tape readings decide the result: the table's long side, the drop from ceiling to tabletop, and what your ceiling box can carry. Get those three right and a made-to-measure bar looks drawn for the room.

What do I measure before ordering a linear chandelier?
Six readings, taken in the finished room with the table already in place.
- Measure the table's long side in the shape you use most days. An extension table measured fully open gets a fixture sized for a table you see twice a year.
- Measure the floor-to-tabletop height, then the floor-to-ceiling height, and subtract the first from the second. The difference is the total drop you have to work with.
- Multiply the long side by 0.5 and again by 0.67 to get your length window in inches — half to two-thirds of the top.
- Divide the table's width by three for the widest body the top will carry front to back, without the fixture looking pressed down on the plates.
- Find the ceiling outlet box and read its rating. A box rated only to carry a luminaire of up to 50 pounds sets the weight ceiling for the whole job.
- Measure the doorways and stairs the crate must pass. The 72 in bar alone is 300 pounds.
How long should the bar be for my table?
Half to two-thirds of the table's long side, centred on the table rather than the room, and never running past the ends of the top. On an 84 in table that window is 42 to 56 inches, which is why a 54 in bar fits it and a 36 in bar does not.
| Table's long side | Half to two-thirds window | Size that fits |
|---|---|---|
| 60 in (5 ft) | 30–40 in | 36 in |
| 72 in (6 ft) | 36–48 in | 36 or 54 in |
| 84 in (7 ft) | 42–56 in | 54 in |
| 96 in (8 ft) | 48–64 in | 54 in |
| 108 in (9 ft) | 54–72 in | 72 in |
Leave 6 in of bare table at each end as a floor, not a target. A 54 in bar on an 84 in table leaves 15 in bare at each end; a 72 in bar on the same top leaves 6, which is deliberately tight and leaves both ends dim. Where two sizes both fit the window, take the one nearer the middle unless the fixture is heavy, in which case take the shorter.
How much drop do you have, and where does the bar hang?
Set the lowest point of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Over a dining table, work at the low end — 30 to 33 in — because the eye is seated and close. Then subtract everything before you buy:
ceiling − tabletop − clearance = the room left for canopy, rod and body.
On a 96 in (8 foot) ceiling over a 30 in table, a 33 in clearance leaves 33 inches for everything above the bar. A fixture that cannot assemble shorter than that number will hang below the band however it is trimmed, so the drop rod — not the width — is the number to confirm on a made-to-measure piece. Where the ceiling is high or sloped, our chandelier sizing for a vaulted ceiling works the same arithmetic.
What changes when you change the size?
A linear chandelier does not scale evenly, and the numbers that move fastest are not the length. From our Pearl 36″ / 54″ / 72″ listing:
| Specification | 36 in | 54 in | 72 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net weight | 138 lb | 175 lb | 300 lb |
| Depth, front to back | 20 in | 20 in | 24 in |
| Price | $2,978 | $3,939 | $6,629 |
Doubling the length from 36 to 72 inches more than doubles the weight (138 to 300 pounds) and widens the body from 20 to 24 in deep, so the two shorter sizes share a footprint the longest does not. Length is the cheapest variable to change; weight and depth are the ones that change the plan.
Will your ceiling box carry the size you want?
A ceiling outlet box used only to support a luminaire is commonly rated for up to 50 pounds, and anything heavier needs support independent of the box. Every linear size here clears that limit — the lightest bar is 138 lb — so the box is never carrying the fixture by itself. A larger bar also moves its suspension points further apart, which spreads the load over a wider span and changes where the reinforcement has to go.
Which linear chandelier for which table?
One frame, three lengths. The Pearl Linear Rectangle Glass Chandelier 36″ / 54″ / 72″ is the same hand-blown glass rectangle offered in three bodies, in vintage brass, bronze or satin nickel, from $2,978. Each glass drop is 4½ inches across and 5 inches high; the drop is adjustable and can be extended for a tall room, and custom heights and finishes are built to order.
The size an 84 in table wants. The 54 inch Pearl sits inside the two-thirds window at 54 inches wide by 20 in deep, on a 3½ inch canopy, from $3,939.
For a table past nine feet. The 72 inch Pearl runs 72 inches wide by 24 in deep, 300 lb, with 33 E12 sockets — take it only after the ceiling box and the drop are settled.
A single length, lighter body. The Eclatant Modern Crystal Rectangular Linear Chandelier 54″ fixes the length at 54 inches in a body only 10 in deep and 5¼ high, 73 pounds of K9 crystal and brass from $2,889, with a drop adjustable from 6¾ inches to 15′6½″ for rooms with high ceilings.

FAQ
How long should a linear chandelier be for an 84 inch table?
Between 42 and 56 inches — half to two-thirds of the 84 in long side. A 54 in bar sits inside that window and leaves 15 in of bare table at each end; a 36 in bar is too short and a 72 in bar leaves only 6 in, which reads as tight.
Should the bar be centred on the table or on the room?
On the table, because the light has to follow the seating. A canopy plate hides a small offset along the length, so a box a few inches off the table's centre line still lands under the plate; the offset that shows is across the bar's width.
How high does a custom linear chandelier hang above a table?
30 to 36 inches from the tabletop to the lowest point of the fixture, and 30 to 33 in over a dining table. Then check the arithmetic: ceiling − tabletop − clearance = the room left for canopy, rod and body.
Will a 72 inch linear chandelier fit on my ceiling box?
Only with support independent of the box. A standard ceiling box is rated for a luminaire of up to 50 pounds, and the 72 in Pearl is 300 lb, so plan a reinforced mounting plate and a second attachment point before you order.
What else changes if I order the longer size?
Weight and depth, faster than length. Going from 36 to 72 inches takes the net weight from 138 to 300 lb and the depth from 20 to 24 in — both of which decide the support, not the look.
Measurements and prices come from our published fixture specifications; the box-support rule comes from the sources above. Set the length window, the clearance and the weight before choosing a finish, and have the wiring, the ceiling-box support and any hardwired fixture installed by a licensed electrician.
Engineering & Electrical Safety Advisory
- Structural Load Mandate (NEC 314.27): In accordance with National Electrical Code Section 314.27(A)(2), any luminaire exceeding 50 lbs must not be supported solely by standard plastic or sheet-metal outlet boxes. Our fixtures include pre-drilled solid steel mounting canopies designed for direct structural lag bolt attachment to ceiling joists.
- Dimmer Circuit Compatibility: Field-tested with 110V–120V US architectural phase dimmers. We strongly recommend pairing with Lutron Diva DVCL-153P, Lutron Caseta Wireless, or Leviton Decora Smart dimmers to ensure 100% flicker-free dimming across E12/E26 high-CRI LED arrays. Avoid legacy non-LED inductive wall switches.
- Transit & Timber Crating Protection: All fragile mineral stone diffusers and optical glass elements are individually isolated within custom-molded high-density EPE foam cradles and shipped inside reinforced solid timber crating ($180 value complimentary) to guarantee zero transit fracture.
